What is Vermont Coverts?
We are a 501(c) (3) nonprofit established to educate landowners about sound forest management and wildlife stewardship. Coverts flagship program is the Cooperator Training program. This intensive 3-day event offers classroom and field studies about forestry and wildlife. Cooperators also commit to providing assistance to friends, neighbors and communities to encourage forest stewardship. In addition, 1-day workshops are held throughout the state to focus on specific forest and wildlife topics. With more than 85% of Vermont's forested habitat in private ownership individual landowners can play a key role in enhancing and protecting wildlife habitat.
Covert (pronounced KUV-ert) is an old English word describing a dense thicket that provides shelter for wildlife.
Why Sponsor Vermont Coverts?
Vermont Coverts offers a unique training for private landowners and provides them with the tools to affect change on their own property and that within their communities. As a statewide organization Coverts has a diverse and growing membership. These landowners work on their property cutting firewood, recreate through a variety of mechanisms like; hiking, snowshoeing, bird watching, and skiing. They also contract with consulting foresters and loggers to develop management plans and conduct forest management.
